Duration:

  • Start Time: ~16:00
  • End Time: ~17:00

Focus:

  • Main Activity:
Exploring low cognitive load workflows on iPad only
  • Tools Used:
iPad, AUM, Hilda, Model D, Pen2Go, MIDI utility (for visualizing MIDI messages), Eventide ShimmerVerb

Observations:

  • What Worked Well:

    • Eventually got a great sound from Model D with smooth, musical filter sweeps
    • Saved the session setup for re-use
    • Found a creative, rhythmic way to use the filter sweep for ambient or techno styles
  • Challenges or Issues:

    • Hilda didn’t work at all despite multiple attempts
    • MIDI controls in AUM seemed ineffective, especially with older apps
    • MIDI learn features weren’t flexible — couldn’t just type in controller values
    • Took a long time to find the right settings via Model D’s deeply nested menu

Creative Insights:

  • Interesting Discoveries:

    • Once dialed in, Model D became very playable via screen keyboard
    • Works surprisingly well for swells and rhythmically controlled ambient tones
    • A tactile MIDI controller would improve the experience, but touch works in a pinch
  • Ideas for Next Session:

    • Use Mosaic (or similar) to send specific MIDI messages for programming
    • Pre-configure synths with correct CC mappings
    • Explore articulation of sound—set up filter, envelopes, etc., ahead of time

Mood/Reflection:

  • How I Felt Before:
Tired, cold, but settled after coffee and kids fell asleep

  • How I Felt After:
Refreshed, satisfied — found value in old tools and a relaxed, low-cog approach
